1880s Japan Ambrotype Woman+Bonsai Flower, 1/2 Kiri Case (#23)
One of a kind, 1880s Japan Ambrotype, Woman + Bonsai Flower, 1/2 Kiri Case. Caution; time damaged, very old with many years of survival, please examine the high resolution photos. (Thus the low price). When Japan opened its ports to the West in the 1850s, photography-called “shashin”, literally, “a copy of truth”, soon became widely available. High-end professional salons and open-air studios operated by itinerant practitioners offered portraits at every price range. While the popularity of ambrotypes, a positive photograph on glass, was short-lived in the United States, Japanese ambrotypes were in demand from the early 1870s until the end of the nineteenth century. Housed in poetry-inscribed kiri-wood boxes, they provide an intimate and rare glimpse of how modern Japanese society represented itself. James Ambrose Cutting patented the ambrotype process in 1854. Ambrotypes were most popular in the mid-1850s to mid-1860s. Cartes de visite and other paper print photographs, easily available in multiple copies, replaced them. An ambrotype is comprised of an underexposed glass negative placed against a dark background. The dark backing material creates a positive image. Photographers often applied pigments to the surface of the plate to add color, often tinting cheeks and lips red and adding gold highlights to jewelry, buttons, and belt buckles. The collodion positive, or ambrotype, first appeared in about 1853. By the 1860s the process had largely disappeared from high street studios, but it remained popular with itinerant open-air photographers until the 1880s, because portraits could be made in a few minutes while sitters waited. Kiri wood (case) is native to Japan and is akin to balsa wood (except stronger). Proper name is “Paulownia” and is known in Japan as kiri. Tomentosa; it is also known as the “Princess tree” or the “Phoenix tree”. Paulownia is the mon of the office of the Japanese prime minister, and also serves as the Government Seal of Japan used by the Cabinet and the Government of Japan (whereas the chrysanthemum is the Imperial Seal of Japan). Antique Junghans Clock with Inlaid Wood Case B07 Mvmt Running, Striking, & Chiming
Antique Junghans Bracket Clock w/ Inlaid Wood Case B07 Westminster Chimes – Running Striking & Chimin g. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! Very unique and uncommon inlaid wood Junghans clock case here. The clock probably dates to the 1908 to 1915 period. Nice design below the clock face that carries thru lines that go around the perimeter of the face. Then check out the beautiful curved top on the clock. The case is all intact, no missing pieces. Some minor finish loss to the case, most noticeably on the left base of the case. The rear wood door is split in a couple of places and needs attention, so that it will snugly latch in place again. The 4 wood feet are also still in place on the clock case. Beautiful mahogany case on this clock. The clock face is silver with black numbers. Some loss of finish around the wind holes. The bezel is securely attached to the case by the hinge. The concave glass in the bezel is intact, no cracking or blistering. The movement looks good. The time spring is wound tight. The chime and strike springs both feel sound when keyed. The movement was quite dirty and will need a good cleaning and servicing. The clock comes with what appears to be the appropriate pendulum. The clock movement was tanked, cleaned, and serviced by Clock Doc and is in running and striking condition. The first two pics of the movement are after it was cleaned. The clock will come with a wind key. The clock has a Westminster Chime’s unit. The clock chimes every 15 minutes, and then chime and strikes on the hour. This is a five rod chime/strike unit. The Junghans Clock stands 16″ tall, by 11.5″ across, by 7 wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
