Exceptional Large 1940-50s KYUGETSU GEISHA DOLL in ORIGINAL Glass & Wood Case
This is a gorgeous Geisha doll by the Kyugetsu Company from the late 1940s to late 1950s. She is a 16 1/2 inch doll, not counting the hair and base, 17 1/2 with the base on her original wood and glass case with silk backing. The case measures 21 7/16 inches tall with a 12 1/2 and 11 1/8 base. The Kyugetsu Doll Company has been in business since 1830 in Tokyo, Japan, and they are considered the premier maker of Geisha and Samurai Dolls. This doll was probably brought back shortly after WWII. She has a porcelain head on a silk body. Her silk Kimono is in the style of the Azuchi-Momoyama Period. She has her wooden name plaque (I do not read Japanese so I can’t translate the name), and carries a small wooden box in her long, slender fingers. Her figure and face is especially graceful and her clothing is in perfect condition. The only flaw is her silk thread hair should be combed back into a tighter bun in back which I will leave to the next owner. I have caught it up in a bobby pin. Her hair combs and ribbon are in her hair as you can see. I see no flaws other than that, and she is in exceptional condition for a seventy year old doll as she has been kept in the original glass case. The original paper label is in intact under the stand and reads Kyugetsu Doll, Tokyo, Japan, Made in Japan. Please see all the photos for condition. View more great items.
