A legendary Antique “Hand of Glory” Safety Talisman. In centuries past and throughout Britain and Europe, those whose nefarious trade it was to enter the homes of the sleeping and the unaware, believed the severed hand of an executed criminal with a candle attached, would ensure a successful nights burglarizing and guarantee their own safety from detection or DEATH. Whitby Museum contains such a relic but they are very rare. The one you see here is believed to be a very old wooden carved example used to substitute the real thing and prepared by a dabbler in the Dark Arts to have the same powers as a real severed hand. Whether they worked or not – who knows? I have collected objects of the unusual kind for years and I now wish to commence the process of scaling my collection down. The Hand of Glory is approximately 12cm long and believed to be a medium hardness wood. It is very detailed and looks like the shrivelled hand of a mummy – but I assure you it is wooden. It is mounted in a brass stand which slides into two brass stays, inside a good and sturdy glass and metal case. Its age is estimated at anywhere between latest Victorian, or even much earlier.
