Antique Nautical Marine Bronze Ship's Sextant In Wooden Case Maritime Decor
This nautical pocket Sextant is brand new and is very skillfully made. The case measures overall 6″ inches in length x 6″ width and is 3.25 inches tall. The Sextant is made of solid brass and the case is wood with brass accents. Charming pocket sextant as used by Victorian explorers and surveyors. Intricate and semi-functional, it has all the pieces needed to shoot the sun. A sextant defined latitude. Defining the angle of Sun and Stars with the horizon was an important way to navigate and survey. A beautiful intricate little instrument with an interesting and ancient history. This Sextant is the perfect size for an executive desk. Size: Case is 6″ L x 6″ W x 3.25 H. Includes: Wooden display case. Like the Davis quadrant (also called backstaff), the sextant allows celestial objects to be measured relative to the horizon, rather than relative to the instrument. This allows excellent precision. However, unlike the backstaff, the sextant allows direct observations of stars. This permits the use of the sextant at night when a backstaff is difficult to use. For solar observations, filters allow direct observation of the sun. A sextant does not require a completely steady aim because it measures a relative angle. However the relative position of the two images will remain steady, and as long as the user can determine when the celestial object touches the horizon the accuracy of the measurement will remain high compared to the magnitude of the movement. The sextant is not dependent upon electricity (unlike many forms of modern navigation) or anything human-controlled (like GPS satellites). For these reasons, it is considered an eminently practical back-up navigation tool for ships. Authentic Models Inc was created more than 40 years ago in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
